This year’s Emmy Awards were marked by more than just celebrity glamour and accolades, as several stars used the platform to make political statements and call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Actors and nominees expressed their support for Palestinians through symbolic fashion choices and powerful speeches.
Fashion and Fiery Speeches
Hannah Einbinder, who won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Hacks, wore a red Artists4Ceasefire pin and ended her acceptance speech by saying, “Go birds, [expletive] ICE and free Palestine.” She later explained that as a Jewish person, she felt it was her “obligation” to distinguish between her religion and the state of Israel. Other celebrities, including Javier Bardem, wore keffiyehs and told reporters that they would not work with companies that “justify or support the genocide” in Gaza.
The Growing Movement in Hollywood
The Artists4Ceasefire movement has gained significant momentum in Hollywood, with its signature red pins appearing at multiple major awards ceremonies. The collective’s mission is to amplify the global call for a permanent ceasefire, the return of all hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Einbinder and Bardem, along with other stars like Ava DuVernay and Joaquin Phoenix, have also signed the “Film Workers for Palestine” pledge, vowing to boycott Israeli film institutions.
