Trump and Modi Express Optimism for an Upcoming Trade Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have both expressed optimism about finalizing a trade deal in the coming weeks. After months of strained relations, Trump said on social media that he looked forward to speaking with Modi and felt “certain” that a successful conclusion would be reached. Modi echoed this positive tone, calling the two nations “close friends and natural partners” and stating that teams from both sides are working to finalize discussions.

A Shift from Recent Tensions

The recent statements mark a significant shift in tone following months of difficult negotiations and rising tensions. Earlier, Trump had imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports to the U.S. after India refused to stop buying Russian oil. India’s chief economic adviser had warned that these tariffs could negatively impact the country’s GDP. The total two-way goods trade between the U.S. and India was $129 billion in 2024.
